Ryan Carrillo-Kovach

Ryan Carrillo-Kovach is a stage 2 ACC warrior. Before his diagnosis, he grappled with unexplained hormonal issues for many years. Unfortunately, Ryan received his diagnosis just before his thirty-first birthday and wedding on July 23, 2023. Initially, doctors attributed his struggle with managing multiple ACC-related symptoms like adrenal insufficiency, Cushing’s syndrome, and gynecomastia solely to hormonal issues. However, a twelve centimeter mass, described to him as the size of a grapefruit, was eventually discovered on his right adrenal gland. Acting swiftly, doctors removed the mass, initially mistaken for a liver-related issue.

 

Following an open adrenalectomy that marginally affected his right kidney and liver, and necessitated the complete removal of the gland itself, Ryan's tumor pathology confirmed a stage 2 ACC diagnosis. His medical team discussed his prognosis, treatment options, and future steps with him. Despite initial concerns that he might not survive surgery, Ryan consulted with the NIH to optimize his care and management of ACC. After an 8-week recovery period, he began treatment with Lysosdren (Mitotane).

 

Though originally from the Bay Area, Ryan currently resides in Sacramento, California, where he completed his undergraduate studies concurrently with his wife. His interests include spending time with family, fitness, music, and film.

 

Supporting the NIH would be an honor for Ryan, whose greatest wish is to raise awareness about ACC among those unfamiliar with the disease and to emphasize the vulnerability of the ACC community, which faces ongoing battles each and every day.
